UK Announces New Plug-In Solar Rules Set to Launch on August 27, 2026

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – UK solar power capacity reached 22.8 gigawatts by the end of June 2026. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero reported approximately 2.076 million installations nationwide. During June alone, households, companies, and developers added 27,391 systems, creating 132 megawatts of new capacity. Authorities may update these provisional figures as more project data becomes available in the national database. The total encompasses domestic rooftops, commercial sites, and utility-scale solar farms.

UK solar market reaches 22.8 GW before new plug-in rules
New UK plug-in solar rules set an 800-watt limit for approved household systems.

June marked the second-highest month for installation figures in the UK dataset, with March 2026 remaining the record holder at 28,782 new systems added. Over the year ending June, solar capacity grew by 2.2 gigawatts, representing a 10.9% increase. The year 2025 also saw a record annual addition of about 269,000 systems, with smaller rooftop installations leading the count and larger projects contributing most of the capacity increase.

All eyes now focus on the new plug-in solar regulations that will take effect on August 27, 2026. The framework permits approved microgenerators to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible devices can deliver a maximum of 800 watts of alternating current output and must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2, ensuring safe operation with the local distribution network. Notably, the rules exclude plug-in batteries and devices that store electricity imported from household circuits.

Safety regulations oversee plug-in connection procedures

This legal update amends the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 along with the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The amendment introduces a specific exception to restrictions on plugs used for generating equipment, requiring each plug to be certified by a notified body as conforming to BS 1363 standards. While product approval applies across the UK, the electricity safety regulation covers England, Wales, and Scotland.

The interim specification establishes standards for electrical design, mounting, fire safety, labeling, and consumer instructions. Under controlled conditions, a technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring, confirming stable operation and the absence of sustained unsafe energization or thermal issues. The study also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality. These findings contributed to the development of a UK-specific safety standard necessary for market approval.

Retailers prepare to market approved plug-in products

A government consultation received 466 responses from businesses, experts, regulators, and the public. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specifications, with most also endorsing the plug-in regulation changes. Participants ranged from manufacturers, installers, and network operators to electricians, academics, and consumer organizations. Some expressed concerns about older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Others called for clearer differentiation between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems.

Major retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are already preparing for the launch of the new product category. This format offers solutions for households unable to install traditional rooftop systems, including renters and those with balconies or outdoor spaces. Devices using the new connection method cannot operate legally before August 27. Starting from that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect via a standard household socket. It is important to note that the June capacity total does not include systems utilizing the new plug-in framework.
