    Spain Sets New Record for Hottest Summer as Heatwave Days Reach 61

    MADRID / RankWire.AI / – Mainland Spain experienced its warmest summer since official records began in 1961, with an average temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius across June, July, and August. Official data issued by the national meteorological authority confirmed that seasonal temperatures surpassed the previous record set in 2025 by 0.3 degrees Celsius and rose above the 1991–2020 climate baseline by 2.4 degrees Celsius. The country endured the hottest summer on record as extreme heat events impacted roughly two-thirds of the meteorological summer period.

    Data published by the State Meteorological Agency reveals that Spain recorded an all-time high of 61 heatwave days during the three months. This total significantly exceeds the previous peak of 41 heatwave days during the summer of 2022. Experts from the meteorological sector highlighted that all ten of the hottest summers documented in Spain’s history have taken place in the 21st century, illustrating an accelerating long-term warming pattern across southern Europe.

    The severe thermal stress had a profound effect on public health and municipal infrastructure throughout both northern and southern regions. According to epidemiological mortality data from the Carlos III Health Institute, more than 5,000 deaths were directly linked to extreme heat between June and August. This figure represents the highest total recorded since the health monitoring agency began standardized heat-related mortality tracking in 2015.

    State Meteorological Agency Confirms Record Highs in Seasonal Temperatures

    Prolonged dry conditions also led to critical environmental issues across Spain’s national forests and rural farms. Data from the European Forest Fire Information System shows that approximately 296,000 hectares of land were consumed by wildfires through early September. The hottest summer on record also strained regional reservoirs, with extended drought reducing water supplies and creating major challenges for agricultural irrigation systems and hydroelectric facilities.

    Atmospheric monitoring stations noted that the exceptional thermal conditions persisted beyond the typical summer months. On September 2, a station in El Granado, in southwestern Spain, recorded a peak temperature of 45.7 degrees Celsius, tying the national September record for the highest temperature ever observed in Spain. Weather experts confirmed that high temperatures remained prevalent from late May into early September across numerous autonomous communities.

    Following the official meteorological findings, government ministers presented the data to parliament, urging stronger environmental safeguards. Minister for the Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera appealed to parliamentary groups to back comprehensive legislative measures focused on climate adaptation, emergency infrastructure, and drought resilience strategies.

    Meteorological agencies and public health authorities will continue monitoring temperature patterns and environmental impacts throughout the autumn. Official data and environmental records will remain accessible via government portals as authorities evaluate long-term adaptation strategies. Regional agencies are coordinating efforts to manage resources and mitigate ongoing impacts on agriculture and ecosystems.
