    Austria Reports Record July Temperatures at 40.3°C and Economic Losses of €1.4 Billion

    WIESELBURG, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria experienced its highest temperature for July on July 31, when Wieselburg recorded 40.3 degrees Celsius. This surpassed the previous July record of 39.7 degrees, which was set in Dellach im Drautal in 1983. GeoSphere Austria validated the new monthly peak amid a heatwave concentrated in eastern regions of the country. The nation’s absolute temperature record remains 40.5 degrees, measured at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in August 2013.

    This July milestone followed a June characterized by widespread and persistent extreme heat. According to GeoSphere Austria, 157 out of 277 monitored weather stations reported new maximum temperatures for June. Sixty-six stations also logged their highest temperature ever for any month. On June 28, Vienna hit 40.0 degrees, while Bad Deutsch-Altenburg reached 40.1 degrees the next day. Multiple low-altitude areas experienced temperature readings above 30 degrees for 10 to 14 consecutive days.

    The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimated that the combined socioeconomic impacts of the June and late July heatwaves total roughly €1.4 billion. This preliminary estimate encompasses health consequences, productivity losses, agricultural damage, infrastructure stress, and increased cooling demands. It also factors in impacts on ecosystems and public services. The amount does not constitute an official government figure or an insured-loss total, as insurance data only includes claims covered under active policies.

    Heatwave intensity exceeds previous Austrian records

    The Wegener Center utilized area-degree days to quantify these events, which combine measures of heat intensity, duration, and geographic extent. Their calculations indicate about 16,700 area-degree days for the June heatwave. The late July episode is estimated to have reached between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s prior record was set during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which accumulated approximately 22,100 area-degree days across land below 1,500 meters elevation.

    The extreme heat was also linked to a notable rise in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety projected 395 such deaths in June 2026, marking the highest June total recorded by the agency since tracking began. Heat-related mortality reflects deaths occurring above expected levels during periods of elevated temperatures. This calculation does not require heat to be listed as the sole cause on death certificates.

    Severe drought worsens due to lack of rainfall

    Following months of unusually dry conditions, Austria experienced the heatwave. Rainfall from January 1 to July 27 totaled approximately 426 millimeters, compared to the long-term average of 609 millimeters for this period, indicating a shortfall of nearly 30%. Authorities characterize the first seven months of 2026 as the driest comparable stretch since at least the early 1900s. Regions such as Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland reported some of the most significant rainfall deficits.

    Persistent high-pressure systems, intense sunshine, and limited precipitation accelerated evaporation rates during late spring and summer. These conditions depleted soil moisture and increased stress on crops, rivers, forests, and water supplies. Climate records for Austria reveal that heatwaves have become more frequent, prolonged, and intense over recent decades. The average maximum temperatures during heatwaves have risen by about three degrees between the 1980s and the 2020s. The newly recorded July temperature further underscores Austria’s ongoing trend of rising extreme heat levels.
