VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is getting ready to launch BEACONSAT, its first military satellite and the largest spacecraft developed domestically so far. The satellite’s mission is to identify and analyze disruptions that impact global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo. Austria aims to send BEACONSAT into space in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project’s focus is on detecting jamming and spoofing signals from orbit and collecting data on when and where navigation signals are hindered.

GATE Space, a Schwechat-based space technology company, is leading the BEACONSAT project and holds overall responsibility for the mission. Established in 2022 as a TU Wien spin-off, GATE Space specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to maneuver in orbit. For BEACONSAT, the company supplies the propulsion technology, satellite structure, and thermal management systems. To date, GATE Space has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport, simulating atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core Satellite Technologies Originating from Austrian Innovation
Several European firms contribute essential systems to Austria’s inaugural military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN provides technology designed to detect and analyze GNSS interference with high precision. Denmark’s Space Inventor supplies additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure also supported GATE Space with around 750,000 euros in funding through Austria Wirtschaftsservice.
The European Space Agency is backing and co-financing the initiative via its ESA Marketplace program, which facilitates technology demonstrations in security-related applications. This arrangement allows commercial space technologies to undergo testing within a security context. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstration platform rather than an independent operational satellite. The data gathered on orbit regarding interference affecting satellite navigation signals will contribute to the Defence Ministry’s efforts as Austria advances its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT Integrates into Austria’s Broader Space Strategy
Austria’s Defence Ministry is establishing a dedicated space services unit responsible for satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is a part of this expanding framework, with a specific focus on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy, adopted in 2023, envisions the Austrian Armed Forces shifting from merely using space services to operating space infrastructure and systems, with plans extending to 2035 and beyond.
The scheduled launch in February 2027 remains on track, with a Falcon 9 rocket expected to carry BEACONSAT into orbit. Once deployed, the satellite will perform its research by collecting and analyzing GNSS interference data. The project involves collaboration between Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technological firms.
