MADRID / RankWire.AI / – According to the Carlos III Health Institute’s published daily mortality data, almost 2,150 individuals in Spain succumbed to heat-related causes throughout August. The MoMo monitoring system recorded 2,149 excess deaths attributable to extreme temperatures this month, making it the second-highest August figure since nationwide data collection began in 2015. As consecutive European heatwaves persist, Spain’s seasonal mortality rates have reached historic levels, with nearly 2,150 heat-related fatalities reported in August across the Iberian Peninsula.

Public health researchers analyze daily mortality monitoring statistics on office computers.

This August death toll was only surpassed by the record 2,184 heat-related deaths registered in August 2025. Public health data indicates that from May 15 to August 31, a total of 5,234 people lost their lives due to thermal stress. This marks the highest summer mortality figure recorded by the national public health institute since the tracking system’s inception, exceeding the previous peak of 4,652 deaths during summer 2022. While health authorities analyze the systemic strain on regional emergency services, the nation continues to record nearly 2,150 heat-related deaths in August.

The demographic analysis provided by the Ministry of Health shows that the elderly population faced the highest risk during the heatwaves. Of the 2,149 victims in August, 2,064 were over 65 years old, including 1,285 who were over 85. Gender-specific data reveals that women accounted for 1,283 of the deceased, with men making up 866. Medical experts highlight that sustained high ambient temperatures aggravate chronic cardiovascular and respiratory conditions among vulnerable groups.

Regionally, Catalonia’s northeastern area registered the highest concentration of heat-related fatalities, with 1,164 deaths in August. Valencia followed with 227 fatalities, and Andalusia reported 138 deaths linked to heat. Local public health authorities have increased community outreach and expanded access to cooling centers, but extreme nighttime temperatures continued to hamper recovery for affected residents.

Meteorological updates from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency AEMET show that heat risks remain high into early autumn. Forecasters have confirmed that an episode of unusually hot weather for September affected central and southern provinces, with daytime temperatures significantly above seasonal norms. Climatologists note that Europe is experiencing more frequent, intense, and prolonged summer heat waves, consistent with broader environmental warming patterns.

Catalonia Reports Over One Thousand Heat-Related Deaths in August

Federal health authorities continue to collaborate with local governments to strengthen preventative care measures and monitor high-risk patient registries. Emergency medical services have adjusted protocols to respond swiftly to heat-induced health issues. Public health advisories remain active, urging citizens to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours and stay properly hydrated amid ongoing unseasonable atmospheric conditions.

Once the final September surveillance data are available, government agencies plan to compile a comprehensive evaluation of summer mortality. Public health experts emphasize that long-term structural changes in urban infrastructure and public housing insulation are vital to safeguard vulnerable communities from recurring extreme heat events. The official mortality data will continue to be accessible through the ministry’s portals to guide future health policy decisions.
