The study highlights how climate change worsens drought conditions across the continent, with unprecedented heat levels serving as the main driving force, surpassing the influence of seasonal rainfall deficits. European countries are experiencing critically low river levels, widespread water restrictions, and severe wildfires following a historic June heatwave. The data reveals that a warming global climate significantly accelerates moisture evaporation from land and water bodies, fostering a highly dry and unstable environment. Despite below-average spring rainfall, it was the temperature spikes driven by climate change that pushed the region into a critical drought phase.

Published by the World Weather Attribution group, the research underscores how rising temperatures actively diminish natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah of Imperial College London explained that the drought is not mainly caused by a lack of rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere creating larger moisture deficits on land. This means the risk of drought continues to grow even in areas where rainfall patterns have not changed significantly. Scientists point out that for each one-degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapor. This additional capacity amplifies evaporation from soil and vegetation across the landscape, worsening drought conditions.
By analyzing extensive weather data and utilizing advanced computer models, researchers assessed how current conditions compare to a climate that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their findings show that extremely dry soils are now five times more likely in western Europe than they would be in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, similar soil moisture deficits are 11 times more probable. Additionally, the study found that the high evaporative demand observed from April to June in western Europe is roughly 80 times more likely. This indicates that rainfall deficits, which previously wouldn’t have caused severe drought, now result in much drier soils.
Calls for Urgent Global Emissions Reductions
Dominik Schumacher of ETH Zurich highlighted that the tendency for unusual soil drying has already increased during spring before the onset of summer. He explained that rising temperatures cause the atmosphere’s thirst to grow rapidly, draining vital moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil. The combination of an early wet period followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid drying of land primed it for ignition, contributing to severe fires across multiple nations. The study confirms that climate change is intensifying droughts across europe, shifting traditional weather patterns into highly dangerous cycles.
The agricultural sector is under unprecedented pressure due to widespread soil moisture loss. Drought conditions are severely impacting farming communities, leading to historic crop failures across various countries. France, for example, is projected to record its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, signaling a major disruption to regional food supplies. Meanwhile, Romania has lost more than one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of the agricultural supply chain. These domestic shortfalls, coupled with ongoing global conflicts, risk driving up food prices and disproportionately affecting low-income households.
Projected Warming Trends for the Future
The hydrological impacts compound the economic damages, with unusually low river levels disrupting vital cargo transportation routes. Major shipping interruptions in key waterways reflect the worsening severity of the water scarcity crisis across the continent. Diminished river flows threaten energy production in regions heavily reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirms that the recent June was the hottest recorded in western Europe. Several countries have already introduced emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve the shrinking supplies.
Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, drought conditions could become even more frequent. Experts emphasize that these intense evaporative conditions are already occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the immediate risks posed by current emissions levels. Should global temperatures reach 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of such evaporative events could double. Without swift and substantial emissions reductions, specialists warn that Europe is heading toward a future marked by relentless, scorching, and dry summers.
